Happy 20th birthday, IndiGo!
In August, India’s IndiGo airline – one of the fastest-growing carriers in the world – celebrated 20 years of service and reaffirmed its commitment to scaling up responsibility and growing the business into a “world-class airline that the nation can take pride in”.
IndiGo’s growth has tracked India’s broader connectivity and economic growth. The carrier started with a single aircraft; today it operates a fleet of 430 planes connecting 140+ destinations across India and the world.
“IndiGo shifted perceptions from budget travel to smart travel. [Its] journey mirrors India’s emergence as one of the world’s most dynamic and high-growth aviation markets,” the airline said as it marked the anniversary milestone.
The airline says nearly 90% of India’s population now lives within 100km of an IndiGo-served airport. The addition of ATR72 aircraft operations has strengthened regional connectivity, while India’s confidence in the market’s long-term potential has led to landmark aircraft orders: a 2023 commitment for 500+ Airbus aircraft (a mix of A320neo, A321neo, and A321 XLR) – the largest single order in commercial aviation history – followed by an order for 60 wide-body Airbus A350s with options for 40 more.
IndiGo’s international route network now spans more than 40 destinations across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, supported by partnerships with 13 international carriers.
Looking ahead, the airline says it plans to operate ~3,000 daily departures, serve nearly 200 million passengers annually, and expand its fleet by 550+ aircraft by 2030. A corporate venture capital arm, IndiGo Ventures, has been set up to foster aviation innovation by offering support to start-ups shaping India’s aviation future.
IndiGo’s sustainability blueprint is multi-faceted: alongside low-emission aircraft, the carrier runs one of the largest aviation training academies and operates two in-house maintenance, repair, and overhaul facilities, with a third under development.
Aviation veteran and Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, Willie Walsh, said: “I can confidently say that only a few airlines combine scale, growth potential and customer relevance the way IndiGo does. India is poised to become a key force in shaping the future of aviation, and IndiGo is well-positioned to support the nation’s ambition of becoming a global aviation hub. As we enter the next decade, I look forward to working closely with this wonderful team to expand our international footprint, continuously elevate customer experience, and build a globally relevant airline from India.”
AirlinePros Internatinoal Chief, Global Sales Automation & Client Enablement, Judith Kolakowski, added: “IndiGo’s expanding international network and strong domestic connectivity across India make it an attractive option for agents building India and beyond-India itineraries. Trade partners can access and sell IndiGo through the following channels:
“Beyond competitive fares, IndiGo offers opportunities around bundled ancillaries, baggage, meals and other merchandising products, allowing agents to better tailor the offer to customers and potentially improve overall transaction value. Trade partners in the US can contact AirlinePros Regional Sales Manager, Arpit Handa [Ahanda@airlinepros.com] or Rodney DCruz [RDcruz@airlinepros.com], to request sample routings and bundled offers for India, or sign up to the AirlinePros trade portal with sell sheets and product news about our more than 50 GSA airline partners.”
